We have welcomed a wealth of visitors to Wetherby-Pembridge over the last two weeks and all tours, child play sessions and interviews for September 2018 are progressing very well. I have been delighted to see how welcoming your children have been and all visiting candidates have been greeted with a smile and a wave (and even a hug in the Nursery!) I have had the chance to meet two Wetherby alumni this week and Luke Parker-Bowles and Constantin Kirwin-Taylor dropped in to send their best. Constantin had not realised we had opened in New York and was on a photo shoot outside the school completely by chance. It was seeing a Wetherby blazer walking confidently down East 96th that prompted him to knock on the door! Then, Saudin Robovic IM (International Master) from NYChess arrived bringing with him tremendous excitement for next term. Saudin will come and talk to the children about Chess on Friday 1st December and he will then run a chess workshop on Wednesday 6th December at 8.30-9am in the Hall for all children and parents in Pre-K and Kindergarten. Do come along and take part and I will certainly be there to pick up a few tips! Chess will run as an after school club from January and we hope this will be the start of a long standing tradition here at Wetherby-Pembridge.
One of my favourite books is being released at the Cinema this Friday. I remember reading ‘Wonder’ by RJ Palacio a few years ago and being very moved by the story. I ran a senior assembly when I returned from the holidays and recommended it to the Wetherby boys in London. Admittedly the book is aimed for older children (and adults) but it quickly became a much- loved favourite amongst the children and staff. ‘Wonder’ tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of Auggie Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey unites them all and proves you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. As we all break for the Thanksgiving Holiday next week, this charming story of courage, kindness, friendship and character is enough to fill any family with genuine cheer.
On that note, I would like to wish you all a very special and memorable Thanksgiving Holiday with family and friends. School will be closed in honour of the celebration from Wednesday to Friday next week.
