First constructed in 1913, Ogden Codman House has long operated as a school facility on the Upper East Side. Situated at 7 East 96th Street at 5th Avenue, the school is just 200 feet from Central Park and in the heart of the Carnegie Hill neighborhood of the Upper East Side. This area is known for its historic charm, plentiful cultural institutions and small neighborhood feel.
The building provides 15,000 square foot of classrooms and teaching spaces over its 6 floors. On-site facilities at 7 East 96th Street include a dedicated art and design technology studio, science lab, and an expertly curated library. At the heart of school life is the Founders’ Hall: it is here that school assemblies, music performances and educational seminars are hosted.
A fully catered, community-style lunch is served in the dining facility to all pupils. Nursery children have the safety of a private outdoor courtyard for playtimes.
The building has been fitted with a high-spec Science laboratory catering for ages 5-13, and a multi-purpose auditorium for drama, public speaking, music and yoga.
As a Manhattan school, we take advantage of the many amenities right on our doorstep: Central Park is only steps away and where our preschool children enjoy daily walks. From Kindergarten, children experience educational trips to the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art, Carnegie Hall and many more collections to complement the formal curriculum.
Swimming and sport take place a few blocks away at the 92Y on Lexington Avenue.
Our historic landmark building
The school building was designed by Codman himself in the neo-French Renaissance style, inspired by his childhood in Paris. When the building was designated by the Landmarks Preservation Committee in 1966, they remarked that ‘on approaching the house, Paris and the Champs Elysee immediately comes to mind’. It is one of the last 3 residences built in 1915 still standing on East 96th Street – a genuine piece of New York architectural history and heritage.
